LOS OLIVOS DISTRICT AVA
This is how you do Los Olivos.
Four blocks, one flagpole, roughly thirty-five tasting rooms. Los Olivos has the highest concentration of places to taste wine per square foot of any town in California. It is the definition of time well spent. It began as an 1860s stagecoach stop and then a narrow-gauge railroad terminus, which amounts to Victorian style buildings and a tiny grid. Your entire day’s plan sits within a five-minute walk of the flagpole at Grand Ave. and Alamo Pintado. Though you may be tempted to tackle thirty-five tasting rooms between noon and 5PM, take it from those of us who have been-there-done-that — the magic number is three. Pick one winery you have read about, one small producer you have never heard of, and one pouring a variety you are sure you do not like, because we relish changing your mind!
