SANTA YNEZ VALLEY AVA
This is how you do Solvang.
Solvang was founded in 1911 by Danish Americans who purchased nine thousand acres to establish a folk school—a community-centered institution offering practical, cultural, and civic education. Inspired by the architectural traditions they cherished, the town’s residents later added the windmills and half-timbered facades that give Solvang its distinctive Danish character today. What matters for a wine trip is the layout: roughly twenty tasting rooms inside a few walkable blocks, plus the largest supply of hotel rooms in the valley. Sleep here, drive out to the vineyards in the morning, come back, walk to wine in the afternoon, and enjoy the town. The tasting rooms are a mix of valley estates keeping a downtown outpost and small producers who pour nowhere else, which makes this a lovely place to taste widely without a driver. Then eat at one of the Michelin-recognized kitchens in town. And don't sleep on the æbleskivers! Solvang has some of the best Danish bakeries in America.
